At the beginning of 2015, I was working as a Private British Nanny for an expat family in Qatar in the Middle East. I noticed that there wasn’t anyone providing specialist support around sleep, childcare and breastfeeding. As I increasingly had parents approach me asking for advice,I decided to start the Mothership International Facebook page in order to provide a safe and inclusive arena for mothers to get support and share their experiences. This was also a way for me to continue to provide support to families remotely when I wasn’t with them.
Over the course of one night, I woke up to find over 700 people had ‘liked’ the page, and I had 20 emails from people asking for advice and desperate for help with their children’s sleep.
Word of mouth caused the community to grow fast, and I even had people coming up to me in the street and suggesting I join The Mothership International – effectively referring me to my own company!
It was clear from day one that there was a great need for this service. At the time, I was working as a nanny for an entrepreneur and he suggested right away that I turn the Facebook community into a business supporting mothers and especially expat parents through the development of specialist sleep packages for their children. On returning to London, I trained as a sleep trainer and launched The Mothership International website, offering tailor made sleep packages online. This works well for expats and those in the UK, because people don’t actually want to bring experts into their home during the night, so it’s really beneficial to offer a virtual service online. It also means that I can call on experts from all over the world, to offer a truly unique and tailor made package for each of our clients. It’s really important to do it this way, because we are empowering the parents to achieve success and createsleep patterns for their children, themselves. We give them expert guidance as well as personalised one-to-one support throughout the process, but ultimately they will never feel that they can’t do it on their own, because they have achieved it themselves without the need to bring us into their homes.
Once the idea had taken seed, I did some competitor analysis and only found two other companies offering anything similar, and neither were based in the UK. Since we officially launched in April 2015, the Facebook page now has over 8,800 likes, and the quantity of questions and people looking for advice which I receive daily acts as proof in itself that there is a very real need for this service.
Due to the demand, and the fact that I am still working full time as a nanny, I’ve been able to employ Julie, another sleep consultant.
We also have several volunteers and experts who help us on a regular basis – a qualified breast feeding expert, a parenting coach and an osteopath specialising in working with mothers.
